The French state began the seventeenth century neither centralized nor integrated; by the end of the century, it was both. Louis XIV built upon a process already initiated under Louis XIII, expanding the use of the Intendant de justice, police et finances, appointed directly by the Crown to represent it in the provinces and colonies. Greater standardization and extension of royal justice, substantial increases in taxation and the army, expanded the French state.
