(23 January) The Conrads leave London for Corsica, travelling through France, where they visit the battlefields near Armentieres. They stay in Ajaccio and are joined there by Pinker and his family, returning to England on 10 April. (25 March) Notes on Life and Letters appears.

90-1) FORD, Ford Madox (1873-1939), novelist and cntic. Of Anglo-German parentage and originally named Hueffer, he changed his name at the end of the Great War. He met Conrad at the home of Edward Garnett in September 1898, and they subsequently collaborated on The Inheritors ( 1901) and Romance (1903). Pent Farm, where the Conrads lived 1898-1907, was rented from Hueffer. After the completion of Lord jim he accompanied the Conrads on a visit to Belgium. In 1908 Hueffer founded The English Review, which became an influential literary journal and published Under Western Eyes and The Shadow-Line as well as their collaborative effort The Nature of a Crime.

Baines describes him as 'the only man from the whole Congo episode of whom Conrad spoke with any enthusiasm'. When Casement was accused of treason, however, Conrad refused to sign a petition for a pardon. CLIFFORD, Hugh. As a young colonial officer in Malaya, he discovered a copy of A/mayer's Folly in a Singapore bookshop in 1895 and read it enthusiastically. When he returned to England he called on Conrad and became a lifelong friend. Clifford later 18 A Conrad Companion became colonial secretary of Ceylon and was knighted.
